Abstract
It is now generally accepted that the fatigue process is one of energy conversion, and the energy responsible for the formation of an engineering crack is that of plastic flow. As a consequence, it might be thought that limiting the amount of plastic flow will have the effect of increasing the fatigue life of a structure. In general, this conclusion is correct, provided that it is limited to describing only the crack formation stage.
