Abstract

Developing power is mostly recognised too late; existing power is seen as a threat generally only after it has passed its peak. In the 1950s and 1960s multinational firms were able to embrace, octopus-like and without interference, Europe and the developing countries. The full implications of this evolution were recognised only in the late sixties when these firms had already attained their maximum power. But it is only now that they have moved into the focus of public interest, perhaps at a time when multinationals have already passed the zenith of their influence.
