Abstract

As I pointed out in the first chapter, the special characteristic of the conception of the desirable shape of the economic system entertained by the Classical Economists was a comprehensive one. Given the functions of the state in maintaining law and order and providing special services which individuals or small groups were unlikely to provide, the System of Natural Liberty, as it was called by Adam Smith, involved freedom both in the realm of consumption and in the realm of production.
