Abstract

What does an equation mean? In the earlier pages of this book, if you saw an equation like

$$y = 2x + 3,$$

or

$$P = 1000x + 500$$

then the emphasis was on FINDING y or P from particular values of x. However, an equation has much more to it than that: they need not be SOLVED; they can just BE. An equation represents the relationship between two (or more) variables. That relationship could be expressed verbally, e.g. ‘When x gets larger, P gets larger’.
