Abstract
In volume 1 various arch centres up to a span of 1 m were dealt with; we shall now cover simple centres up to a span of 3 m. Naturally as the span increases so do the timber sizes, but not necessarily in the same proportion. For instance, in two centres, one of 1 m span and the other of 2 m span, it would be found that the timbers of the largest centre would only be slightly larger than the others, provided each centre had been constructed correctly. Before going on to the larger type of centre, a centre for a pointed arch will be described.
