Abstract

The sequence of the nine amino acid residues in oxytocin and vasopressin is shown in figure 9.1. Residues 1–6 form a 20-atom ring and 7–9 an acyclic, C-terminal, tripeptide tail attached to the ring at position 6. In vasopressin an arginine or lysine residue occurs in position 8, contrasting with a leucine residue in oxytocin. The only other difference in structure between the hormones involves position 3, which is isoleucine in oxytocin and phenylalanine in arginine- and lysine-vasopressin.
