Abstract

Our understanding of the detailed molecular biology of the peptide hormones is among the areas of most rapid advance in endocrinology; studies of biosynthesis, secretion, metabolism, interaction with receptors and stimulus-response coupling in target cells are proceeding apace. These studies, which concentrate on the fine detail of molecular interactions of individual hormones, should not be allowed to distract attention from the remarkable uniformity of organisation revealed by considering peptide hormone endocrinology as a whole.
