Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of compressive stress, shear stress, and bending moment on the intervertebral disc between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae during three methods of lifting. This site in the spine was chosen because the axis of movement in flexion and extension passes through the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral discs (Fick, 1904) and it is the site of the most serious lower back injuries (Chaffin, 1969).
