Abstract
This chapter is devoted to state provision of training in Britain. It does not discuss the vast array of programmes and courses available in the United States because the extensive literature on the American experience has already been subjected to a number of detailed and critical surveys (e.g. Ribich [84], Hardin [68], Goldstein [83], O’Neill [91]).
