Abstract
Research and development are carried out in many different situations, for different purposes, at different scales of magnitude and with different organisational structures, so that R & D departments are as variable as production activities, indeed probably more so, and nearly every such department is unique in the nature of its objectives, relations with parent organisations, structure and needs.
