Abstract

The chief purpose of this paper is to place the facts of renal acidification and bicarbonate reabsorption in vertebrates into quantitative perspective. To do this we must consider the chemistry of the hydration of carbon dioxide or of the hydroxylation of carbon dioxide, the properties of renal secretory cells, and the role of carbonic anhydrase in these processes.
