Abstract

The name ionophore was suggested by Pressman, Harris, Jagger & Johnson (1967) for compounds which carry cations across lipid barriers. Ionophores can be classified as (a) and (b) by their effects on respiring mitochondria and these correspond to different kinds of molecule, (a) neutral macrocyclic, and (b) monobasic acids, both kinds contain many oxygen atoms.
