Calculating the Elastic and Plastic Components of Deflection of Joints Formed from Machined Surfaces with Flatness Errors

  • Chapter

Summary

Contributions to successive MTDR Conferences have stressed the need for knowledge of the behaviour of joints in machine tool structures. At the twelfth conference, the authors presented theories for calculating the elastic and plastic components of deflection of plane joints formed from machined surfaces1. In this paper these theories are extended to the more general case of joints formed from surfaces with flatness errors. Again, a mathematical expression of surface finish is applied to the calculation of elastic and plastic deflections and from these, values of initial deflection and elastic recovery can be made. Experimental results show that the method is valid within the limits of accuracy of the surface finish expression.
