Copernicus’ Administrative Documents

Abstract

While Copernicus was studying medicine at the University of Padua, he was informed that he had been appointed scholaster of the church of the Holy Cross in Wroclaw (Breslau, in German). Being unable under the circumstances to leave Padua and go to Wroclaw in order to take possession in person of his new position, he resorted to the legal device of a proxy, nominating two Wroclaw canons to act in his behalf. To make his proxy unassailable, he engaged the services of Stefano Venturato, a public notary in Padua. The Paduan Notarial Archive (Archivio Notarile) still preserves Venturato’s files, where Copernicus’ draft proxy was found in Volume I, folio 173, by the archivist Dr. Erice Rigoni, who published it in Archivio Veneto.1
