Abstract

During combustion the temperature of the burning gases are (momentarily) sufficient to melt the metal of the cylinder. It is the function of the cooling system to prevent the engine becoming overheated (in practice the oil film would be burned away and the pistons expand and seize in position before the engine melted), but at the same time to allow it to operate at a temperature high enough to ensure efficient operation.
