Abstract

All reactions are incomplete, although in many cases the conversion is so close to 100 per cent that it is impossible to detect unchanged reactants. There is, in other words, always a position of equilibrium at which the rate of conversion of reactants to products is exactly equal to the rate of the reverse reaction. The equilibrium composition of a reacting system is of great commercial significance because this determines the yield and hence the cost efficiency and viability of a manufacturing process.
