Abstract
WINSTON SPENCER CHURCHILL was born on November 30, 1874. The Churchills were a West-country family, which rose meteorlike to fame and fortune in the person of the great Duke of Marlborough. Thereafter, for one hundred and fifty years, they lived chiefly on their laurels, until the second son of the seventh duke began to write a new chapter in the family history. The story of Randolph Churchill has been superbly told. Today he is remembered as the man who gave a fresh impetus to the Tory Party in the humdrum eighties, when its leadership was respectable rather than dynamic, who fell out with Lord Salisbury and “forgot Goschen,” and while still a comparatively young man was struck down by a terrible and incurable disease.
