Abstract
THE WORK of Maria Montessori and of Homer Lane made a deep impression on progressive education in this country after the First World War. Each of them claimed to have rediscovered the significance of freedom for children, but their practical conclusions were vastly different, so variant that with-out misprision they may be called the two magnetic poles round which for a time the lines of force in English innovatory education formed themselves.
