Abstract

Coils and transformers are generally regarded as the Cinderellas of all the components used in the electronics industry. They are often bulky and inelegant in appearance, they are usually mounted in out of the way places, odd corners or in inaccessible positions in completed equipment. They are misused, abused, overloaded and overheated, but in spite of all these handicaps they generally perform extremely well. It is true to say that they have the reputation of being the workhorses of most equipments but they also have a reliability record second to none. Most often the failure of an electrical winding occurs due to other components failing initially, thus causing the winding to be overloaded, eventually overheated and to finally break-down.
