Abstract
This chapter subject covers a very wide range of power, and the many different applications covered by these engines have greatly differing requirements. The smallest diesel engines develop a power of around 2 kW at maximum continuous speed and, as this chapter covers powers up to 400 kW, the power range is about two hundred to one. The application varies from the concrete mixer, powered by the smallest engines, to the crawler tractor, powered by the largest engines, although engines throughout the range are used for a variety of applications, including some common applications such as the generation of electricity.
