Abstract
When Fanfani resigned after the election of April 1963 Segni certainly did not wish to reappoint him as Prime Minister. The Christian Democrat Secretary-General, Aldo Moro, a member of the corrente of the Dorotei, then cautiously leftist, seemed the man to choose as Fanfani’s successor. Moro came to terms, as they both thought, with Nenni. But on the night of San Gregorio on 14 June 1963 Riccardo Lombardi staged one of his coups from within the PSI. He was said to be in league with Fanfani — what a couple they were — in upbraiding Nenni for having agreed to accept too little on planning, the regions and possible co-operation with the Communists in central Italy where the regions would be Red.
