Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to explore the idea of a relationship between variables, and the symbolic expressions used to specify such relationships. For those who do not like mathematics, the more unwilling readers of this volume, while arithmetic may be boring, algebra tends to be somewhat mystifying. If asked to calculate areas of rooms and volumes of water tanks, they are uninterested; but as soon as symbols, or in particular the mysterious ‘x’ creeps into the conversation, a series of mental blocks is frequently encountered.
