Abstract
In Chapter 1, we proclaimed our purpose as the study of mathematics. Straight away, in Chapter 2, we built a model relating one variable (distance) with another (time), and ever since our study of functions and calculus — that is, our study of analysis — has been concerned with y as a function of x.
