Abstract
The existence of specific receptor macromolecules incorporated within the structural framework of the cell membrane is implicit in any theory dealing with the action of drugs. Until recently our knowledge of receptors has been mainly indirect, resulting from the study of the responses observed at the cellular or organ level, namely metabolic changes, contraction of muscle, secretion of glands, and so forth. The primary interaction, which is at the initiation of a chain of events leading to the physiological response, can only be sought at a macromolecular level and true progress can only be achieved after isolation of the chemical entity involved in the interaction with the drug.
