Abstract
Perhaps no other Italian city offered such opportunities to artists as Rome, where the papal court returned in 1420 and remained except for the years 1434–43. The following selections reflect the style and munificence of the exalted clerical patronage of popes and cardinals; they cannot convey the volume of it.
