Abstract
Little is known about Zanetto Bugatto, the Lombard painter sent to Flanders, but this letter documents with precision the close northern influence upon the circle of painters patronised by the Sforza, which included Foppa and Bergognone. Taste in court circles was generally more drawn towards France and the Duchy of Burgundy than towards Tuscany. Rogier van der Weyden is believed to have visited Rome for the Jubilee of 1449–50, and there were a number of his paintings in Italy according to the short ‘Life of Rogier’ by Bartolomeo Fazio.
