The Success of the ‘New Thinkers’

  • Stephen Haseler

Abstract

The sluggish giant is not always slow to incorporate new ideas into its bloodstream. The ‘new thinking’ of the early 1950s, and the ideas circulated by Crosland, Gaitskell, Strachey and others in the mid-1950s, culminated in 1957 in the adoption by the whole Labour Movement of the policy document on public ownership, Industry and Society.I This was a thoroughly revisionist document, and its publication would have been inconceivable had it not been for the groundwork carried out by revisionists following the defeat of the Party in 1951.
