Torquay, a holiday and conference town of international repute, is magnificently situated on 6,000 acres of Tor Bay in South Devon. It has long been a watering-place and summer resort, and, because of its relatively mild climate in winter, has a high reputation as a place for convalescence and retirement. Currently, large-scale developments of luxury flats, rising in commanding positions overlooking the bay, are giving substance, in outward appearance at least, to the traditional description of Torquay as the Riviera of Britain.
