The progressive schools have, since the foundation of Abbotsholme in 1889, started from a position of protest made against other types of school, against certain procedures in schools, against condescension to children in any society, against academic emphases in the curriculum, against formality and lack of spontaneity in personal relationships, and against authoritarianism in all its forms. The affirmations corresponding to these protests can be detected scattered through the earlier pages of this book and ought now to be brought together.
