Abtract
Considers the more mainstream genres of rock, new wave and jazz. Key artists from the 1960s include the Zombies and, especially, the Kinks and their album Arthur. Songs from major stars such as Pink Floyd, Sting and Radiohead are examined before a section on progressive and experimental rock. From the 1970s ‘new wave’ the Clash’s ‘Something about England’ is a key track and this is followed by a look at songs by rock/folk ’mavericks’ Roy Harper and Richard Thompson. The chapter concludes with a discussion of two important jazz ‘concept’ albums: Mike Westbrook’s Marching Song and Bill Carrothers’ Armistice 1918.
