Abstract

Paraguayan history, culture, and national identity have to a significant extent been defined by the country’s geopolitical proximity to Brazil. This is not simply due to the vast size of Brazil in terms of size of population, economy, and land mass, but also to the perceptions, fears, and realities of Brazilian intervention. From constant threat of invasion in colonial and early post-independence periods, through the catastrophe of the Triple Alliance War (1864–1870) and its aftermath, to the re-establishment of Brazilian influence from the 1960s, Paraguay’s economic and political development has been closely tied to its relations with Brazil. In this sense, the so-called rise of Brazil on the global platform in the new millennium has not fundamentally changed the relationship, but, instead, has put pre-existing tensions into sharper focus.
