Abstract

Iceland was first discovered and settled by Norwegian seafarers in the Middle Ages in their exploration of the North Atlantic and the North American coast. Thus, Greenland and Iceland were initially Norwegian possessions and were only transferred to Denmark in 1380, when Denmark inherited the Norwegian crown. From that time until the early twentieth century Iceland was an overseas territory of Denmark (like Greenland and the Faeroe Islands).
