Abstract

Nobel Prizes are intrinsically controversial. Prizes for seemingly welldefined achievements in science and mathematics are on occasion contested by claims that someone else came up with the concept first. Prizes for literature are still more controversial in view of national, ethnic, and linguistic differences on top of deep disagreement over the relative merits of one work versus another even when the candidates are writing in the same language.
