Abstract
The story of U.S.-Romanian relations during the last years of the 1980s is a somber, even depressing tale, one of steady decline marked by frustration and annoyance on both sides. As reform gained ground in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, the Ceauşescu regime became more repellent and less useful to the United States. A deterioration in relations between the United States and Romania was inevitable.
