Abstract

They entertained each other, first and foremost. They talked. They would sit in the kitchen having cups of instant coffee. In the old days, they used to smoke. They would gesture, the cigarette at the end of the flourish. And their conversation was always a brilliant, real activity, an involvement, like a journey that was full of new experience — for both. They gave each other their thoughts. They also poked fun at each other, gently for the most part. I have a postcard from Egypt written to me by my father in 1976: ‘Ann has just described my conversation as consisting of something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.’
