Abstract
Several years ago, when we decided to collaborate on The Language of Names, the biographer A. Scott Berg urged each of us to keep a journal. Writing a book together was sure to make an interesting story, he said. We found his enthusiasm ominous, suspecting that he had in mind a kind of meta-narrative featuring two viewpoints on a four-decade-old marriage as it followed a declining arc toward self-destruction.
