Abstract

[T]here was one man who did not prophesy falsely, let me remind you. There was one man who said, “Let’s talk sense to the American people.”

Eugene J. McCarthy was a U.S. Senator from Minnesota. This section of the Prologue was originally a part of his third Presidential nominating speech of Adlai E. Stevenson, presented on July 13, 1960, in Los Angeles—also, a eulogy. With his permission, this portion of his speech and eulogy are from pages 196–98 of the Hard Years by Eugene J. McCarthy (Lone Oak Press, 2000).
