Abstract

These words, declared to me by the late Dick Campbell on 3 June 1992, describe one of the twentieth century’s most talented artist/activist couples, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. They have sustained dual careers for more than 50 years and have undertaken vast professional projects in theatre, film, radio, and television as a couple and as individuals. Married 50 years on 9 December 1998, they celebrated by raising $300,000 for “twelve community theaters, $25,000 apiece, in tribute to the theaters where they began their careers” (Kinnon 49).

“Ossie and Ruby are one!”
