Abstract
The efficiency of every complex system depends on the efficiency of its component parts. In a medical enterprise, that efficiency is often most dependent on the personnel who work in the department. Suboptimal efficiency not only slows down the department and decreases the quality of patient care, it is also demoralizing. Optimizing worker efficiency is the role of workflow engineering and quality improvement. In particular, understanding the pitfalls that can subtly undermine worker efficiency is essential for the CIIP.
