Abstract
More than 150 operations have been described for the management of hallux valgus. The multitude of techniques indicates that no single operation can be considered as “the standard,” and none will address all the components of the deformity in all patients. Poorly planned or executed surgery may lead to high levels of patient dissatisfaction. One of the most common complications following distal metatarsal osteotomies is recurrence of the deformity, a direct consequence of inappropriate selection of the patient, incorrect surgical technique, and underestimated healing time of the osteotomy. Recently, a number of new osteotomies have been described, and choosing the most appropriate can be difficult.
