Abstract
On December 14, 2001 a pipe rupture event occurred in the Boiling Water Reactor plant Brunsbüttel. The event scenario and the root cause of the damage are described in detail in [1]. It became apparent that the rupture was caused by a radiolysis gas explosion. As consequence of the explosion authorities asked for a basic investigation to determine all areas with the potential of radiolysis gas accumulation and for qualified measures to detect and prevent inadmissible radiolysis gas accumulations which can cause a degradation of the safety concept if an ignition takes place.
