Abstract
In this chapter we shall examine the string variable type. Strings are sequences of alphanumeric characters. We have used strings already in one or two of our previous PHP examples, specifically as part of the echo statement. We shall begin by examining how strings are defined in PHP, then examine the different types of strings which are available for us to use. We shall then consider how to join strings together, access individual characters within a string and convert strings to numbers.
