Abstract
This chapter explains the basic diagnostic statistics used in medicine, and outlines the most commonly used statistics for estimating the diagnostic accuracy of diagnostic tests. Principles of robust diagnostic study design are given to enhance both study design and critical appraisal of the literature. The methods used to collate multiple study results into a single diagnostic accuracy estimate through meta-analytical techniques are also given, with explanations and assessment of each method.
