Abstract
This mini-review surveys data on bioreactors for H2 production, with particular emphasis on the author’s own data for the last eight years. Two groups of bioreactors can be distinguished based on the nature of H2-evolving reactions: photobioreactors with H2 photoproduction (cyanobacteria and purple bacteria) and “dark” bioreactors based on dark anaerobic H2 production (phototrophic purple bacteria and chemotrophic anaerobic bacteria). Three types of cyanobacterial photobioreactors are described: glasstube photobioreactors, membrane photobioreactors, and spiral tubular photobioreactors. Particular attention in the review is given to microbial “shift reaction” bioreactors, which have potential for near-term practical applications.
