Abstract
This is an important stage in the history of nuclear energy. The Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA) Watts Bar 1 nuclear power plant, apparently the last U.S. nuclear power plant of the current generation, was granted a full-power operating license by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in February 1996, and is expected to begin commercial operation in early 1996. At the same time, the first two designs of the next-generation plants have both received their Final Design Approvals from the NRC and are expected to receive design certifications before the end of 1996.
