Abstract
As we have studied in the last chapter, the use of bandwidth smoothing algorithms complicate the ability to provide fully interactive functions. For accesses outside of the VCR-window, minimizing the amount of data sitting in the client buffer can aid in reducing the amount of bandwidth required when long searches outside of the VCR window are invoked. In this chapter, we present a class of bandwidth smoothing techniques that may be more appropriate for interactive video-on-demand systems.
