1 ‘Maasailand’ denotes a loosely bounded area of East Africa (Fig. 1.1) whose rural population is dominated by Maa-speaking communities which, despite their diversity, self-attribute to Maasai ethnicity. It is not a formal term and does not denote an administratively recognized region.
