3D Reconstruction of Solid Models from 2D Camera Perspectives

Abstract

Engineering objects are represented in the form of manual and computerized line drawings in the production and manufacturing industry. Digitization of manual drawings in some computerized vector format is one of the very crucial areas in the domain of geometric modeling and imaging. There are conventionally three views of an object; front, top, and side. Registration of these 2D views to form a 3D view is also a very important and critical research area. In this paper we have developed a technique for the reconstruction of 3D models of engineering objects from their 2D views. Our technique is versatile in the sense that 3D representation is in both the drawing exchange file (DXF) format recognized by various CAD tools as well as the scalable vector graphics (SVG) format recognized by various web-based tools. We have also described different comparison metrics and have compared our technique with existing techniques.
