Prevention of Childhood Obesity in Childcare Settings

This chapter addresses the topic of childhood obesity prevention in child-care (i.e., preschool and daycare) settings. Despite the increasing interest and attention to childhood obesity prevention, interventions in child-care settings are few. None-the-less, these settings offer great potential because they can reach children at young ages and may influence the development of dietary habits, physical activity, and television (TV) viewing patterns.

The chapter begins by providing the rationale for targeting preschool-age children and childcare settings. Next, viable behavioral targets and programs in daycare or preschool settings are reviewed. Finally, challenges to modifying childcare settings and potential opportunities and/or gaps requiring further research are discussed.
