As laparoscopic surgery has evolved, the number of conditions once thought to present contraindications to laparoscopic (as opposed to open) surgery has gradually decreased. Obesity, previous abdominal surgery, and acute infectious processes are examples of comorbid conditions that are no longer thought to preclude laparoscopy. Clinicians have gradually become comfortable performing laparoscopic cholecystectomies during pregnancy. This chapter explores choice of operative approach for treatment of acute appendicitis during pregnancy.
